Loving wife, mother and devoted grandmother, passed from this life on Saturday, May 9, 2009, at Crestview Retirement Community in Bryan, Texas.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, May 13, at James Crowder Funeral Home in La Marque, Texas.
A funeral service is set for 10 a.m. Thursday, May 14, at First United Methodist Church of La Marque with Dr. Michael Deaton and the Rev. Mike Selzer presiding. Entombment will follow at Forest Park East Cemetery in Webster, Texas.
Mary was born on December 3, 1918 in Newton County, Miss., the daughter of Evan and Nettie (Parks) Johnston. She grew up in the small town, Chunky, Miss., close to Meridian Miss. After graduating High School, she attended East Central Junior College in Decatur, Miss.
She majored in home economics and earned an Associates of Arts Degree in May 1938. She went to work in the County Agricultural Department as assistant to the home demonstration agent.
While working there, she decided to take a Civil Service exam and a few days after the attack on Pearl Harbor she received a telegram from Washington, D.C. inviting her to go to work for the Federal Government.
She moved to Washington, D.C. and went to work as a clerk typist in the U.S. Military Intelligence Service on the night shift. While in Washington, D.C. she met and married Dale W. Armacost, who was stationed in Washington, D. C. with the U.S. Army. They met through mutual friends and were married on November 4, 1945.
She worked for the U.S. War Department for five years and rose to Administrative Assistant of the Intelligence Branch message center.
In 1946, she and her husband moved back to his home of Findlay, Ohio. In 1962, she and her husband moved to La Marque, Texas and in July 2006, she moved to Bryan, Texas.
She was an active member of La Marque First United Methodist Church for more than 40 years and served in many leadership positions.
She was a member of the Mainland Center Hospital Ladies Auxiliary, with over 8,000 volunteer hours and was past President from 1993 - 1994. She was also a member of the Order Of The Eastern Star, Findlay Chapter No. 23 in Findlay, Ohio.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Dale Armacost; her parents, Evan and Nettie Johnston; in-laws, Joseph and Ethel (Noggle) Armacost; brother-in-law, Roy Round of Newton, Miss.; sister-in-law, Berneida Ritter and husband, Max, of North Baltimore, Ohio, and sister-in-law, Martha Armacost, of Findlay, Ohio.
Survivors include her sons, Ted Armacost and wife, Kristi, of Midland, Texas, Joe Armacost and wife, Linda, of College Station, Texas; sister, Belva Pleasants and husband, Hal, of Minter City, Miss.; sister, Ruth Round, of Newton, Miss.; brother-in-law, Orva Armacost, of Findlay, Ohio; grandchildren, Paul Armacost, of Hitchcock, Texas, Chris Armacost and wife, Brandi, of Hitchcock, Texas, Sheri Emberton and husband, Ronald, of Bedias, Texas, Tera Dillard and husband, Frank, of Cypress, Texas Edwin Barnes and wife, Lynda, of Poynor, Texas; step-granddaughter, Shasta Bartlett and husband, Robert, of Austin; great-grandchildren, Megan and Abigail Armacost, Matthew and Sarah Barnes, Kiera Mathis, Lauren and Trey Dillard.
