George was born in Clark county, Ohio, and moved with his parents to Madison county, Ohio, and later Kansas; his father, Obadiah, was a teacher.

He enlisted during the Civil War in Company 'S', 2nd Kansas Infantry. He became sick during his service and never fully recovered.

After serving he married Louisa Wilcox at Fort Scott, and they lived in various places in Missouri, finally settling in St. Louis where they lived at 820 South Tenth street.

George was an engineer, and active in St Louis politics.

He was admitted to the Sawtelle National Soldiers' Home, Los Angeles, in 1902, and died there in 1909, being laid to rest in the National Cemetery nearby. Five children are recorded for George and his wife.
