Dr. A. McCoy Johnston, Jr., PhD, age 72, a resident of Brittany Pointe Estates in Lansdale, died unexpectedly on Wednesday, April 4, 2007 in Los Angeles, CA. Prior to moving to the Brittany Pointe 3 years ago, he resided in North Wales.

Born in St. George, SC on August 23, 1934, he was the son of the late Arletta (Bransford) and A. McCoy Johnston, Sr.

Dr. Johnston was a graduate of St. George High School, Class of 1951, earned his B.S. Degree from Clemson University in 1956, and continued his education at Texas Tech University in Lubbock, TX, earning his Masters Degree and PhD in Education.

He served briefly as a principal at Walterboro High School in South Carolina. He later became an administrative assistant with the Health, Education, and Welfare Department in Charlottesville, VA, transferring to Philadelphia when the main office was moved to that location. After his retirement, he taught GED courses, and college credit courses for 8 to 12 weeks a year for the Navy, including aboard Navy ships that were on active duty, which as a result, allowed him to travel the world.

He was a member of the Sanctuary United Methodist Church in North Wales.

Dr. Johnston is survived by a sister, Lettie Tracy, and her husband, George W., of Lansdale; a nephew, Windsor Tracy and his wife, Laura; his nieces, Pricilla Wert and her daughters Tracy and Allison all of Lansdale, and Patricia Tracy of Princeton, NJ. He had adopted two children which have preceded him in death after suffering with cystic fibrosis, a son, Addison, who died at age 8, and last year, his daughter, Nelle at age 38.

Among his hobbies were travel, playing bridge, and cooking.

His Masonic affiliations included Harmony Lodge No. 61 F & AM in St. George, SC, the Omar Shrine Temple in Charleston, SC, Shiloh Lodge No. 558 F & AM, in Lansdale, Lansdale Royal Arch Chapter No. 301, North Penn High Twelve No. 473, where he was currently serving as one of the vice-presidents, and had previously served as the treasurer, and the Wolcott Foundation.

A Memorial Service will be held on Tuesday, April 10, at 11 AM at the Sanctuary United Methodist Church, 1346 E. Prospect Ave. at Hancock Rd. in North Wales. The family will greet friends from 10 AM at the church, and a Masonic Service will be conducted by Shiloh Lodge at 10:30 AM. Funeral and burial services will be held Saturday afternoon, April 14, in St. George, SC. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in Dr. Johnston's memory to the Wolcott Foundation, 210 S. Broad St., Lansdale, PA 19446. Local arrangements have been entrusted to the care of Kligge Funeral Home, Inc. in Hatfield.
