Charles was a son of John Mason Ormsbee & Polly Willson.

He was a brother to Governor Ebenezer Jolls Ormsbee.

He enlisted as a Corporal in Company G, 1st Regiment, Vermont Volunteer Infantry on 2 May 1861. He was mustered out on 15 Aug 1861 at Brattleboro, Vermont.

He was promoted to Full 2nd Lieutenant in Company H, 5th Regiment, Vermont Volunteer Infantry on 6 Sep 1861. He was promoted to Full Captain on 16 Sep 1862.

He was killed in the Battle of the Wilderness in Virginia on 5 May 1864 and was buried near the battlefield and his grave marked.

His brother, Ebenezer Jolls Ormsbee, going there to recover his body without success.
