Gerald D. Cameron, 80, of Onawa, Iowa, died Monday, April 18, 2005 at Longview Nursing Home in Missouri Valley, Iowa.
Gerald was born December 6, 1924 on the Cameron farm near Danbury, Iowa, the son of Claude and Elsie (Clark) Cameron. He attended school in Mapleton, Iowa and then joined the United States Marine Corp during World War II. He was wounded in Guam and was awarded the purple heart medal.
After his discharge, he married Doris Butcher. The couple made their home in Sioux City, Iowa for several years, before moving to Onawa where he worked for the State Highway Commission for 23 years. Doris passed away December 1, 1998.
After retiring, he enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening and going on excursions with his metal detector.
Survivors include three sons, Kim Cameron of Des Moines, Iowa, Kevin Cameron and his special friend, Linda Noble and Kent Cameron and his fiance' Tina Rose, all of Onawa; four grandchildren, Ashley, Tiffanie and Brittany of Onawa and Jeremy Cameron of Blencoe, Iowa; a sister and her husband, Mary (Cameron) and Don Coenen of Sioux City; a sister-in-law, Laverna Hamann of Anthon, Iowa; nieces and nephews, Ryan Coenen, Brian Hamann, Vicky Mead and Sheryl Ashley and numerous cousins and friends.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Doris; his parents and a grandson, Nicholas.
Funeral services were 1:00 p.m. Thursday, April 21, 2005 at Rush Family Chapel with Rev. Sheryl Ashley, Correctionville United Methodist Church, officiating. Rev. Ashley sang, "Amazing Grace" and accompanied herself on the guitar. Deb Lauritsen was organist. Burial was in Onawa Cemetery with military honors by the United States Marine Corp. Visitation was 4:00-8:00 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home with the family present 6:00-8:00 p.m.
Casket bearers were Jeremy Cameron, Richard Poole, James Shay, Richard Black, Warren Plummer and Greg Allen.
