Amanda Dorothea Voss was born in rural Schleswig, Iowa, January 1, 1903 the daughter of Henry and Dora Brugman Jensen. She received her education through an area country school.
On December 9, 1923, Amanda was united in marriage to Paul Voss by the Reverend William Frese at the Zion Lutheran Parsonage in Denison, Iowa. The couple farmed in the Schleswig area and raised dairy cattle which were milked by hand. The couple moved into Schleswig in 1945 and Amanda found many other things to occupy her time. She did some wallpaper hanging, seamstress work, and even fixed hair from time to time. When Amanda found some free time she was usually busy playing cards with various friends or gone to her favorite fishing hole.
Amanda was a member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig. Amanda entered Eventide Lutheran Home in Denison in 1985 and it was there her death occurred on April 20, 1994. At the time of her death she had attained the age of 91 years, three months and 19 days.
Amanda was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers, Albert, Julius, and Raymond; one sister-in-law, Valsta Jensen. Those left to cherish her memory include her husband of over 70 years, Paul of Denison, Iowa; three sisters-in-law, Lucinda Hunt of Seal Beach, California, Leona Jensen of Storm Lake, Iowa and Angeline Voss of Sibley, Iowa; several nieces and nephews, and many other relatives and friends.
Amanda's funeral ceremony was held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, April 23, 1994 at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig, Iowa with the Reverend Donald R. Wagner officiating. Music for the ceremony was provided by the congregation singing "Old Rugged Cross" and "Heaven Is My Home". A duet was performed by Larry Boeck and his daughter Katie singing "What A Friend We Have in Jesus". Marlene Hight served as organist. Pallbearers included Bruce Petersen, Jim Bral, Mervin Weber, Barry Jurgensen, Larry Voss, and Norman Klinker. The committal ceremony and interment was at Morgan Township Cemetery near Schleswig. The Pfannebecker Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
