Hiram Bragg was born in New York in 1837 and died at Del Norte, Colorado March 14, 1909. Hiram was living in Colorado when he entered the service during the Civil War as a Corporal in Co. E, 1st Colorado Calvary. His unit was involved in an engagement with Indians at Apache Canyon the same day as the Battle of Glorieta Pass on March 26, 1962 under General Chivington. He then fought at Peralta as the Confederate Army was retreating from the Battle of Glorieta Pass. On October 28, 1878, Hiram was united in marriage with Amanda Roberson in Pike County, Illinois. After the war, Hiram, his wife, Amanda, and their family, moved to Del Norte where he engaged in road construction and mining. His daughter, Nellie Hutchinson and a nephew, Leroy, survived him at the time of his death in 1909.
