Clarence Lawrence Carter, 69, of Roanoke, Virginia, departed this life on Friday, May 8, 2009, at the Veterans Medical Center in Salem Virginia.

He was born in Charlottesville, Virginia, on April 6, 1940, to the late Russell and Harriett Carter.

He was preceded in death by his half brother, Walter Carey.

He graduated from Jackson P. Burley High school in 1959, and then joined the United States Army. While in the service he received many awards and medals such as The National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, RVN Campaign Medal, Good Conduct Medal, Bronze Star Medal, and the Cross of Gallantry Award. He retired from the Armed Services as Staff Sergeant after serving 20 years.

He leaves to cherish his memory, two brothers, James Robert Carter and his wife, Pauline, of Barboursville, Virginia, William Russell Carter and his wife, Sharon, of Charlottesville, Virginia; five sisters, Sarah Page and her husband, Kenneth, Henrietta Carter, Harriett Carter, Christine Anderson and her husband, Johnie, all of Charlottesville, Virginia, and Nancy Carter of Lynchburg Virginia.; a special friend, Bertha McGeorge of Roanoke Virginia; and a host of nephews, nieces, and friends.

A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Friday, May 15, 2009, at Ebenezer Baptist Church, 113 6th Street N.W. Charlottesville, Virginia, with the Reverend Lehman Bates officiating. Full military honors will be given.
