James was born in Floyd County, Virginia to Charles William Aldredge & Miriam Annie Custer who were from Danville, Virginia. He was the 3rd born child of their 8 children(2 of these died in infancy). These were in order of birth Ella May, Grover Lee, James Henry, Rhoda, Unnamed Girl, Posie Warner, Mary Esther, & George Cabell Aldredge.
He worked as a Grocery Store Clerk in 1910 at the age of 21, then in 1920 he was a Wholesale Grocery Shipping Clerk and in 1930 a wholesale salesman, these last two being in Danville, Virginia.
He married Bessie Linwood wagner on 20 Dec 1911 at the age of 23 in Danville, Virginia by Reverend Smith. They had two children, first a daughter, Margarette Miriam and then a son James Henry Jr.
James died on 04 Feb 1964 in Danville, Virginia at the age of 75.
