Josephine Hughes was born on her fathers ranch in Bennett Valley. She was married to John Robert Pickle on 6 July 1865. On the 1880 census it shows 5 children.

In the late 1880s they moved to San Joaquin County and lived on Roberts Island(Wakefield Landing) and Frances Isabelle(1885) and Eliza Jane(1886) both died there. Sometime before December 1896 John Robert Pickle died.

On 20 December 1896 Josephine married Justus Wright Peer in Stockton California. They lived in San Jouquin County and Contra Costa County(Jersey Island) until Justus's death in 1905. Josephine had Justus committed to the Stockton State Mental Hospital 3 Febuary 1905. Admission statement was "Struck at his wife with chair without cause - talked incoherently, looked wild, went out into the tules appearing to be looking for something, but what - he did not know. Does not seem to realize that he is at home. Died March 4, 1905 of Cerebral Hemorrhage."

Josephine moved back to the family home in Bennett Valley and died 4 April 1906.
