Tommy O'Neil was born on 25th October 1952,
St Helens, Lancashire.

He loved football as well as rugby. Tommy was a schoolboy international at both football and rugby league, but abandoned the oval ball in favour of the spherical one.

He joined Manchester United, as an apprentice in 1968. He played in Midfield, from 1970 to 1973, making 54 appearances.

He also played for Blackpool, Southport, Tranmere Rovers & Halifax Town.

Tommy renewed his United connections by returning to the club as an Academy coach. Until 2005, he worked with various age groups
from Under-9s to Under-16s.

I remember him playing for United. We used to chant his name
to a Marc Bolan song.

I came accross him again, in 2003 when my eldest attended Carmel College, St Helens. He was very popular in the sports department.

It was very sad when he died, at the age of 53, after a fight with cancer.

His funneral service, at St Anne & blessed Dominic Church, Sutton, on 9th May 2006, was packed with standing room only. People from Manchester United rubbed shoulders with those from Carmel College, his many friends & family.

It was a very moving cerermony. One I shall never forget.

Loving husband to Eileen & Father of Kylie & Lyndsey.

A dearly loved son to Winnie & brother to Kevin.

R.I.P. dear Tommy, you will not be forgotten.
