"Coalinga....Funeral services were held today in the Bragg & Sons Chapel for Mrs. Clara Greve (Mrs. Martin) 73, who died Wednesday in Fresno. Burial was in the Pleasant Valley Cemetery beside her husband. Martin S. Greve, who died in October.
Mrs. Greve was born in Michigan and came to Coalinga in 1911 to teach in a small school which was located near the present Warthan Canyon Cemetery. She reecalled that her first night in Coalinga was spent in the Sullivan Hotel on Front Street, just across from the railroad station. The hotel's proximity to Whisky Row, with it's gaiety and all night noise frightened her , she said afterward, and she was glad to leave next day for the peace and quiet of the Elmer Frame Ranch in Warthan Canyon.
She taught for a short time, and because of a lack pupils in that locality, the school was moved into an old house at the foot of Parkerfiled Grade. To this location she traveled back and forth to the Frame Ranch, now the Deverick Ranch, two years; in 1913 she was married to Martin Greve, a member of an old Priest Vallely family, who was working for the Associated Oil Company.
Much of their married life was spent at Station #2, until Greve's retirement from the oil company in 1949. They lived for a time in Santa Cruz, then returned to Coalinga.
Mrs. Greve is survived by three daughters, Mrs. Adele Stripling, Mrs. Adeline Harr of Coalinga, and Mrs. Jean Roberts of Santa Paula; a son Elmo Greve of Los Alamitos, eight grandchildren, and one great grandchild.
