She was the daughter of Edward McCauley and Frances Steele McCauley.
On November 3, 1914 as Mary M. McCauley, she married Herbert S. Howard at St. John's Church in Washington, District of Columbia.
They were the parents of three children including Herbert S. Howard Jr. (1916-2008) and Mary Howard Balloch (1920-2000).

Mary Morris Howard, 93, a lifelong resident of Washington who was a member of St. John's Episcopal Church, Lafayette Square and active in behalf of St. John's Orphanage died of congestive heart failure November 21 at her home in Washington.

Mrs. Howard graduated from Holton Arms School. She married Herbert Seymour Howard, a Naval officer who retired as a Rear Admiral and accompanied him to London, where he was an Assistant Naval attache and to Rome, Paris, The Hague and Berlin. Mrs. Howard belonged to the Sulgrave and Chevy Chase clubs. Her husband died in 1977. Survivors include three children of Marseilles, Washington, and Wilton, Connecticut; eight grandchildren, and 17 great-grandchildren.
