He was the son of William A. Scott and Anne Nicholson Scott.
On November 24, 1862 as Robert N. Scott, he married Elizabeth G. Casey at the District of Columbia.
They were the parents of five children including Silas Casey Scott (1863-1866).

He was buried with military honors. His funeral was held from his residence on DeSales Street. Colonel T.L. Casey and Commander Silas Casey are his brothers-in-law.
