Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. One of the oldest active duty United States Army Officers during the Civil War, he entered the service just prior to the start of the War of 1812 as a 1st Lieutenant in the 2nd Regular Artillery regiment. In 1832 he was promoted to Major and be assigned to the Ordnance Department, where he would spend the rest of his career. After seeing service in the Mexican War, he was promoted to the rank of Colonel in 1851, and assigned as Chief of the United States Army Ordnance Bureau. He served in that duty until 1861, and retired in 1863, having spent 51 years in the Army. On March 13, 1865 he was brevetted Brigadier General, US Regular Army for "long and faithful service". He was the father-in-law to Civil War Union Army generals Henry J. Hunt and John P. Hawkins.
