James R Kendall enlisted for a three year term in the 1st Pennsylvania Cavalry (Pennsylvania Reserve) on August 16, 1861. He was recruited at Carmichael's, Greene County. He was a Private in Company F. He was discharged on a Surgeon's Certificate dated July 28, 1862.

Believe James to be the son of Samuel and Pauline (Custead) Kendall. Samuel was a Baptist minister and died in 1872. James was one of 9 sons and 2 daughters and was probably born in Fayette County, PA.
