Corporal Kuehn was a member of Company C, of the 4th Infantry of the South Dakota National Guard. He was assigned to San Benito, Texas during the Mexican Border campaign. He later served in World War I in the 147th Field Artillery, of the 41st Division. He was awarded both the Mexican Border Service medal and the World War I Victory medal with Aisne-Marne, Oise-Aisne, Meuse-Argonne and Defensive Sector battle clasps.
