He was born August 12, 1932, to Bluford E. and Mary Alta (Figg) Abrell. John was a 1950 Freedom High School graduate and went on to attend Indiana University. He was a member of the First Christian Church in Bloomington and the IU Varsity Club. Mr. Abrell owned five IGA stores in the Terre Haute area and most recently worked for Wetterau in Bloomington, where he retired as President in 1996.
John is survived by his wife of 58 years, Rita (Thompson) Abrell; four sons, Rick (Kathy) Abrell of Terre Haute, Mark Abrell and Steve Abrell, both of Kauai, Hawaii, and Shawn (Courtney) Abrell of Portland, Oregon; one daughter, Debbie Vilchuck of Bloomington; a sister, Patricia Abrell of Freedom; 11 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 20, 2009, at West & Parrish & Pedigo Funeral Home in Spencer. Rev. Helen Enari will officiate. Burial will follow at Riverside Cemetery in Spencer.
