Harold J. Roe, 84, of Macomb passed away Sunday, May 10, 2009, at his residence.

He was born Dec. 11, 1924, in Knoxville, Ill., to Harold L. and Merle (Thurman) Roe. He married Mary Ellen Porter on Aug. 28, 1950, in Pocahontas, Ark. She survives.

Also surviving are four children, Patty Berger of Excelsior, Minn., Gloria (Dr. Joe) Glicksman of Corsicana, Texas, Jim (Cindy) Roe of Thornton, Colo., and Mary Kay Lunt of Winfield, Ill.; and one sister, Barbara Huff of Indianapolis, Ind.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Billy Roe; and a son-in-law, Art Berger.

He was a 1942 graduate of Knoxville High School. After high school, he joined the United States Coast Guard in November 1942 and served until February 1946.

After his discharge from the Coast Guard, he moved to Abingdon, Ill., and managed the Kroger store until 1948. He moved to Macomb in January 1949, where he spent six decades in business. In 1955, he purchased and managed Roe's Dairy. He was a distributor of Sealtest Dairy products in Macomb. In 1966, he opened the Roe Boat Supper Club in Macomb and ran it until his retirement in 1990.

For over 20 years, he owned and raced Standardbred horses. He also raced Sulky horses from Moline, Ill., all the way to Florida.

He was a 50-year member of the Macomb Elks Lodge 1009, a charter member of the Macomb Eagles Club, a 50-year member of the Macomb American Legion, a charter and life member of the Macomb VFW and a 20-year member of the Western Illinois University Athletics Club, where he was inducted to the Hall of Fame.

His real passion was his die-hard love for the Chicago Cubs.

Burial will be in Forest Lawn Memory Gardens, with military rites.
