From February 26, 1866 to November 6, 1867 he was commander of the USS Constitution, also known as Old Ironsides.

He was the son of Seth Henderson and Mary Henderson.
On December 23, 1861 as Thomas H. Eastman, he married Annie H. Maxwell in the District of Columbia, United States.
They were the parents of five children.

Death of Comdr. Thomas H. Eastman
Commander Thomas Henderson Eastman, of the retired list of the navy, died at his home in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, Sunday night. He was an active officer in the service, being connected with the navy from 1853 to his retirement in 1883, when he was incapacitated by illness. He was promoted to lieutenant in 1860 and ordered to the command of the steamers Yankee and Thomas Freeborn of the Potomac flotilla and then participated in numerous ship engagements with rebel batteries and guerrillas. He was afterward assigned to the command of the steamer Keystone State of the Atlantic squadron and was in the contests at Forts Hatteras and Clark and also with the rebel ironclads Chicora and Palmetto off Charleston in 1863. He was commissioned lieutenant commander in 1862 and shortly after was ordered to duty on the Weehawken of the South Atlantic blockage squadron and was on board this vessel at the reduction of Fort Sumter and of Charleston. He leaves a widow and two daughters.

Commander T.H. Eastman, United States Navy, retired, died at his home in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, on Sunday. He was born in New York, August 1837 and was appointed to the navy in 1853, entering then the naval academy. During the war, he took part in numerous engagements, rising in rank from lieutenant to lieutenant commander and in 1871 was commissioned commander. About five years ago, he was obliged to retire on account of incapacity resulting from illness incurred in the line of duty.
Age 50 years. Buried March 23, 1888.
