Wynelle, as she was known, was born Annie Minelle on Feb 25, 1921, in Birmingham, Alabama. She had her name legally changed while she was in high school. Her French teacher kept calling her Wynelle and she decided she liked that better than Minelle. She graduated from West End High School in 1939. She married John Percy Armistead on Feb 19, 1940. Wynelle and John had four children, Sandra Ann in 1942, John Larry in 1945, Michael Wayne in 1952, and David Alan in 1959. At one point, she had 1 child in college, 1 in high school, 1 in elementary school and 1 at home in diapers. Quite a spread. At least when Michael was born, I, Sandra, was able to help with him. By the time David was born, I had gone off to college. It was like having two sets of children in the same family. Mother and Daddy divorced in 1960 and 5 years later Mother met and married James Mac Grant of Montgomery, Alabama. They built a house on Mac's property near Troy, Alabama. When David was 10 years old, Mac legally adopted him and his name was changed to David Alan Grant. Mother worked as an accounts receivable bookkeeper for W.S. Newell Contruction Company for over 25 years. When Mac died in 1997, she moved to Conyers, Georgia, to be closer to her son Larry. She lived there until she died in 2002. Her body was cremated and her remains were buried next to Mac at Orion Methodist Church Cemetery. I still think to myself that I need to tell or ask her something and then realize that it is not possible. My brothers and I miss her very much. Rest in Peace, Momma. Lord knows you deserve it.
