Rev. John Bucklin Mason was born on Jan 8th 1806 in the town of Penfield in Monroe County, New York. He was the son of Brooks Mason Jr (1769-1846) and Jane Clark (1771-1835). He was a veteran of the Mexican-American War and served as a chaplain. He was also a Justice of the Peace in Branch Court, Michigan. His first vocation was as a Methodist preacher in the Methodist Church of Girard Township, and later he became a minister of the Free Will Baptist Church of Wales Corner in Clyde, Ohio. He first married Abigail Dunham on Sept 20th 1826, who tragically died during the birth of their first child on Nov 12th 1828. On Jan 31st 1831, he married Laura M. Shaw (1810-1884), the daughter of Joseph Thomas Shaw (1784-1851) and Hannah Gillet (1786-1844). The Rev. Norman Bentley presided over their wedding ceremony. John Bucklin Mason's daughter with Abigail Dunham, Debory Mason, tragically died at the age of 2 years old in Feb 1830. John Bucklin Mason and Laura Shaw had nine children together: Joseph Thomas Mason (1832-1885), Candice Eliza Mason Booth (1836-1896), Capt. Nathan Briggs Mason (1839-1927), John Colby Mason (1842-1896), Van Renselaer Mason, unknown daughter Mason, Mary Abigail Mason Culbertson, Brooks Horton Mason (1849-1925), and Frederick Edward Mason (1851-1904).

Three of John Bucklin Mason's sons served for the Union in the Civil War. Joseph Thomas Mason was a Private with Co. C of the 52nd Regiment Wisconsin Infantry. Capt. Nathan Briggs Mason served in Co. A of the 72nd Ohio Volunteer Infantry, was captured in Ripley, Mississippi in 1864, and was a POW of the infamous Andersonville Prison. After the war, Capt. Nathan Briggs Mason became the Sheriff of Sandusky County (Ohio) in 1902. John Colby Mason served as a Private in Co. F of the 8th Ohio Infantry and also with the 6th Regiment of the US Cavalry.

Rev. John Bucklin Mason died on July 28th 1888 in Pinegrove, Wisconsin. He was originally intended to be buried along with his wife Laura Shaw and son Joseph Thomas Mason in McPherson Cemetery in Clyde, Ohio. However, since he died while living in Plainfield with his daughter Mary Abigail Mason Culbertson, he was subsequently buried in the Culbertson Family plot.
