Beryl Edmund Foster, 90, passed away on February 21, 2008.

Born in Seymour, Ind., to Jacob and Sarah Brooks Foster, Beryl served this great country in both World War II and the Korean Conflict where he served as an infantryman and as a Military Policeman for a total of four years. He was awarded two Purple Hearts and a Bronze Star during his time of service.

Married to Hallie B. Bottom Foster for 58 years, they began their lives together in Franklin, moved to Shelbyville, Ind., and then on to Columbus in 1960 where they eventually became the owners of White Star Meat Market at Fourth and Franklin streets. Known for their custom butchering and prime aged meats, the White Star was an institution in Columbus in the 1960s ‘70s and ‘80s. Their son, Jerry Foster, made nationwide news with his "hamburger selling promotion" of selling burgers at the price IU held its basketball competitors' score to.

Longtime active members of First Christian Church in Columbus, the Fosters later became members of First Christian Church in Seminole, Fla., until they moved back to Columbus in September of 2006.

Beryl is survived by his wife Hallie; son Greg, and his wife Jeanette; brother, Lester Foster, and his wife Lillian; daughter-in- law, Jan Greenlee, and her husband, Jerry Greenlee; and grandchildren, Jennifer Foster and Ryan Foster and his wife Megan.

While Beryl loved all of his nieces and nephews dearly, a special recognition is noted here that he is also survived by his nephew, Stanley Furnish (wife, Joan), who served with him in the Korean Conflict and to whom he was especially close.

He was preceded in death by his oldest son, Gerald Wayne "Jerry" Foster; brothers, Muriel and Ermel; and sisters, Fairy Furnish and Ruby Miller.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Jerry Foster Memorial Scholarship Fund in order to further the educational opportunities for an annually selected recipient. (Indiana University Foundation, P.O. Box 500, Bloomington, IN 47402)

The funeral will be conducted at 3 p.m. today at Barkes, Weaver & Glick Funeral Home on Washington Street with Richard Land officiating. Calling will be from 1 p.m. until time of service. Military graveside rites will be conducted by Bartholomew County Veterans Color Guard at the funeral home. Burial will be at Garland Brook Cemetery.
