Alden Frazar Burrell was born, on 07 October 1896, to Constance Phelps [Montgomery] and Walter Frazar Burrell. The birth was at the Martin S. Burrell residence, 404 Madison Street, Portland, Multnomah, Oregon. On 10 Dec 1900 he was Christened at Trinity Episcopal Church in downtown Portland, Oregon. The Rev. Clarence H. Lake officiating.

Alden and his brothers and sisters were all sent to the very best schools that Portland had to offer up and through High School. Then the parents picked out the finest colleges that they were able to enter and sent them off to further their schooling. Unless, The male children would have none of it. All the schooling was private based. Virginia, went to Vassar and then Harvard Medical School. She attained at least three master degrees with one or two in Public Health.

Walter, his father, owned many horses and was very wealthy. The son of Martin Strong Burrell a self employed capitalist and a major partner in then famous Knapp-Burrell & Company. With headquarters located on Front Street in Portland, Oregon and said to be the largest supplier of equipment and supplies to mines, mills, farms and logging operations in the Western United States to Alaska. Earlier they sold mostly to farmers in the region. Sending them merchandize and seed catalogs. They ended up having catalog stores in towns around the western states. Places where goods could be ordered from the East Coast and transported by ship. The ordering was often done within another store which was paid a commission for the transaction.

Alden's father became administrator of the million dollar incorporated estate after his father's death. It was overseen by his grandmother who was made chairman. But, it was Walter that ran the corporations business interests and invested the estate's wealth. One has to ask himself how he was able to build just a magnificent home using family wealth. The profits were to be divided among a good number of family members.

Alden never married and was self employed most of his life. Primary occupation was horse trainer. They were the love of his life. He raised, trained, played polo, went on hunts and raced them. Played competitive polo in and out of the military. He and his brother, Douglas, both served in the Army during WWI. He settled in Tucson, Arizona with his horses. Buying a small ranch... with money from his father?

He spent the years racing horses at many tracks in the Western United States and training horses for a living. When I saw him in about 1963, in Portland. He stayed at our home for about two weeks. He got up quite early to drive an old stock truck to the track and feed his horse's. Two horses, I think I remember. I never really saw his horses and he never talked much about them. Every night he came home late at night and smelled of the work he did at the horse barns. He spent the evening reading the newspaper and other things.

When he got too old to live alone his sister, Louise, wanted him to moved into a little cottage she had built in back of her beautiful home. Located in Carpintertia near Santa Barbara, California. She lived a short distance from the Pacific Ocean and had a wonderful 180 degree view of the Santa Barbara Channel. Later, he moved to Venture, Venture County, California.

His death certificate states that he died in the Ventura Convalescent Hospital where he also lived. Address - 4904 Telegraph.

His body was sent to the University of Southern California School of Medicine/Anatomy, at 1333 San Pablo Street, Los Angles, California, 90033. Dated 15 April 1986.

Alden Frazar Burrell set up a base of operations for his horse based business in Tucson, Arizona. From there he raised, or trained, racing horses for the rest of his life. Taking them to many different racing tracks. Always looking for a winner that could help support his life style. Towards the end he was quite poor. He lived with his sister, Louise, for awhile. That must have been a hard pill to swallow. Other than that he had served during WWI and fell back on any and all benefits that came his way. Such as veterans hospitals and an old folks home in California not far from Santa Barbara. He left his body to the University of California Medical Department. He was a quite well educated, strong, well read man that never married. Remained, slender, fairly tall, soft spoken, loved polo, horse racing and other things related to horses. I would say that they were the love of his life.
