Lifelong local resident Dolores Joyce Ashburn, 83, of Toutle passed away May 11, 2009, at the Hospice Care Center.

She was born April 1, 1926, to Otto and Hazel (Hamaker) Fiest on the family homestead in Toutle. She graduated from Toutle Lake High School in 1943.

On Dec. 20, 1947, she married Warren T. Ashburn in Kelso.

Because of her ringlets, Dolores was nicknamed "Curly" as a child. Curly was always busy raising a garden, working on her farm, or having fun with family. She enjoyed working outside and was very proud of her "home and garden" yard. Curly loved clam digging at Copalis Beach, where her family had a small cabin. She was always the first to get her limit, and helped the kids get theirs. When the huckleberries were ripe, Curly and her sisters packed up the kids and grandkids and headed to Olallie Lake near Mount Adams.

Curly was always ready to roll up her sleeves when someone needed help on the farm or around the house. She could run a tractor, mower or baler better than most men. Curly enjoyed cooking and made the world's best popcorn balls every Halloween. She was a talented seamstress, and sewed bridesmaids dresses for her daughter and nieces.

She will be thoroughly missed by all who knew and loved her.

Curly is survived by a daughter, Ruth Ann Ashburn of Bremerton; a son, Tim Ashburn of Toutle; four grandchildren, Janell Wheatley of Toutle, Andy Schaffran of Olympia, Wesley Schaffran of Plain City, Utah and James Ashburn of Toutle; a brother, Stanley Fiest of Toutle; two sisters, Verda Tow and Janice Finkas, both of Toutle; 11 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband in 1993 and two sisters, Norma Drew and Etta Rae Fiest.

A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Friday at Toutle Christian Fellowship with Minister Verl Lee officiating. A graveside service will follow at Silver Lake Cemetery. Viewings will be held from noon to 5 p.m. Thursday and 9 to 11 a.m. Friday at Hubbard Funeral Home.

Contributions in Curly's name made be made to the Community Home Health & Hospice, P.O. Box 2067, Longview, WA 98632 or the Toutle Volunteer Fire Department, P.O. Box 63, Toutle, WA 98649.
