Mrs. Cummings Rites Set;
Mrs. Holmes Cummings. 42, was prounced dead on arrival at King's Daughters Hospital shortly after 7a.m.. Wednesday. Mrs. Cummings died of pistol wounds in the chest, it was reported. Sheriff Joe Brueck informed the Leader Advertiser as it went to press that he could not say, pending investigation, whether Mrs. Cummings death was the result of self-inflicted wounds or whether the death was accidental. No inquest was held as far as the Leader- Advertiser could determine at 12 noon.
It was learned that Mrs. Cummings was at her home on Enterprise road at the time of the shooting. The only other occupant in the home was her husband Holmes ( Preacher) Cummings, owner of Cummings Oilfield Hauling Company.
Funeral services for Mrs. Cummings. the former Viola Townsend, will be held Friday at two o'clock from Brookhaven Funeral Home Chapel with burial in Easthaven Cemetery.
A lifelong resident of Brookhaven, Mrs. Cummings was employed as bookkeeper for Cummings Oilfield Hauling Company. At one time she operated a downtown café in Brookhaven on Railroad Avenue. She was a member of Southway Baptist Church.
She is survived by her husband, and a daughter, Mrs. Patricia Arnold of La Rose La; her parents, Ira H. and Rebecca Pennington Townsend of Brookhaven; a sister, Mrs. Robert O. Eagan of Coral Gables, Florida, and two grandchildren.
