BUTNER -- GEORGE H. SAUNDERS, 86, of Sanford died Friday, May 11, 2007, at the Central Carolina Hospital in Sanford after a brief illness. He was born in Yadkin County to the late Thomas Edward Nathinel SAUNDERS and Rosa Jester SAUNDERS on March 28, 1921.

GEORGE was a World War II veteran and was proud to serve his country.

He enlisted in the U.S. Army at age 22 and reported for basic training to Ft. Bragg on July 23, 1943.

Upon completion of basic training, he became a member of the 110th Signal Company of the 10th Mountain Division and reported to Camp Carson, Colorado, and then on to Camp Hale, Colorado, in February, 1944.

He participated in winter warfare training exercises at Camp Hale and then a period of intense infantry training at Camp Swift, Texas, in June 1944.

In late December 1944, he moved to Camp Patrick Henry and deployed to Italy onboard the USAT General Meigs on January 6, 1945.

He saw combat duty in the Po River Valley region of Italy and served in this region until the war ended. He returned to Ft. Bragg in June 1945.

GEORGE was an employee of the state of North Carolina for more than 20 years, working both with the water filtration plant and John Umstead Hospital in Butner, where he applied his trade as an electrician.

GEORGE retired form his position with the state of North Carolina in 1975 so that he could spend 100 percent of his time with his wife, Edna, who had been injured in an automobile accident.

They spent time together on "the back deck," traveling whenever they pleased and passionately rooting for their beloved Tarheels.

He devoted his life to her, making sure Miss Edna was taken care of. They bought and sold antiques for a period of time and he became the neighborhood repairman.

After the death of his wife, Edna, he moved to Sanford, where he spent his remaining years.

His survivors include GEORGE Thomas "Tommy" SAUNDERS and his wife, Kim of Charlotte; Nancy S. Clark and her husband, William "Billy" of Greenville; two grandchildren, Elizabeth Stewart Clark of Folly Beach, S.C., and Leigh Weathers Clark of Raleigh; sisters, Ethel Burns of Sanford, Pluma Brewer of Winston-Salem and Velma Cameron of Jonesboro; brother, Walter Ray SAUNDERS of Winston-Salem; and special niece, Helen Parrott of Greenville.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 46 years, Edna Stewart SAUNDERS, and most recently his second wife, Laura C. SAUNDERS.

He was also preceded in death by eight brothers and sisters.

GEORGE spent the last three years at his apartment in the Parkview Retirement Village in Sanford.
