A Fort Wayne couple, their teen aged daughter and nephew were among five persons killed in a two car collision a mile south of Nephi in central Utah.
The victims were identified as Glenn L. Bower, 61; his wife Fern O., 58; and daughter Karen S. Bower, 19. Also killed was Mr. and Mrs. Bower's nephew Michael R. Hopkins, 15, of R.R. 1, Peru, Indiana.
The fifth victim was Salt Lake City resident Mrs. Marion Christensen, 54, a passenger in the other car.
The accident occured at 8:10 A.M. on a section of U.S. 91 under improvement. Nephi is about 40 miles south of Provo and 90 miles north of Salt Lake City.
According to Utah Highway Patrol investigators, the Bower car, being driven by Mrs. Bower was traveling north on U.S. 91 and apparently veered off the right side of the pavement, and in an attempt to return to the highway over-corrected and swerved into the left lane, colliding head on with the vehicle being driven by Donald Christensen, husband of victim Marion Christensen. He apparently suffered no or minor injuries as there was no information on him in the article.
Mrs. Bower died shortly after arrival at Nephi Hospital while all the others were pronounced dead at the scene.
Glenn Bower was an office employee at General Electric Company, Fort Wayne. The bodies of the Bower Family will be returned to D.O. McComb & Sons Funeral Home for arrangements.
Michael Hopkins would have been a sophomore at Maconaquah High School near Peru. He is survived by his parents Mr. ans Mrs. Ray Hopkins and a sister, Vicky, at home.
The Eikenberry - Eddy Funeral Home of Peru will be in charge of his arrangements.
