He retired from Hamilton Watch Co. after 38 years of service in the friction jeweling department. He was a member of Pearl Street United Methodist Church and a former choir member. He belonged to the Happy Hour Club. A veteran of World War I, he served in the U.S. Navy as a carpenters mate. An active basketball and softball player most of his life, he limited his participation in sports to bowling after his retirement. He bowled with Retired Citizens Club and the Stock Yard League. He played in the Saturday afternoon YMCA Basketball League until 1957, when he quit at age 61 because, "I began to realize I was slowing down a little and I didn't want to hold back the rest of the players." In addition to his interest in the YMCA, he also player basketball with St. Luke's in the church league from 1929 to 1944. It was early in his church league career that he got his nickname "Pop". "My brother also played and since I was in my thirties then he called out 'shoot Pop, shoot' one day and the name stuck. I've been known as Pop ever since."
