Ruth Abney-Spurlock, his grand-daughter, stated that he died of "Bright's Disease", which was kidney failure. His death certificate gave the cause of death as Chronic Arthritis. However, the information was given by Tom Bartlett of Pauls Valley, with much information listed on the certificate listed as "Don't Know". The doctor signing the death certificate was G.R. Johnson of Pauls Valley.
