Area Soldier Dies in Viet Nam
MANCHESTER - PFC Clifton L. Bacon, son of Mr. and Mrs. Victor L. Bacon of Manchester Depot, died in Viet Nam May 5.
Bacon was attached to the 173rd Aviation Company about 30 miles from Saigon. According to his parents, he had been in Viet Nam less than three months.
The parents received notification of their son's death by telegram Friday from U.S. Department of Defense. The telegram said the death was not connected with "hostile action." Bacon was born in Bennington Jan. 18, 1944. He attended local schools there and in Manchester. He entered the Army April 30, 1965 and was given basic training at Fort Dix, N.J.
Besides his parents, he is survived by two brothers, Kenneth and Victor and two sisters, Christine and Charlene. He is also survived by his grandmother, Mrs. Christine Bacon of Bennington and several aunts, uncles and cousins in Bennington, East Haven, Vt. and Sharpsville, Pa.
According to Bacon's parents, the Defense Department said the body will be flown home for burial, but funeral arrangements are not complete at this time.
