EULOGY - By Ron Ballendine (Grandson)
Mahoney Ballendine was born on September 26, l907, in the Eagle Hills, south of Battleford, to James and Annie Clara Ballendine. He was the oldest of five sisters and one brother. Mahoney attended school at St. Vital and as a young man, worked at various jobs around the countryside. He married Bernadette Falcon on October 29, l935. He built his own home in Battleford where they raised five children and spent many happy years (60 years of marriage). Mahoney enlisted in the Canadian Army during WW II, but did not see active combat. He worked 30 years at the Saskatchewan Hospital until retirement in l973. During earlier years of work, he first walked to and from the Hospital, then rode the bus until he was finally persuaded to buy a car in the 60's. After that, he and mom used to go for long rides in the country to pick berries, trap muskrats, fish and have picnics. He loved to hunt, especially for deer and ducks. He and his friends would go out at dawn and come back at dusk, tired and hungry, and all ready to eat grandma's homemade bread and duck soup.

Mahoney was also a steady church goer and attended the pilgrimage at Duck Lake (St. Laurent) every year until his health failed him. He was a person who enjoyed his privacy and took long walks through the Battleford countryside. He loved Battleford and the prairies around it. After his retirement, his eyesight began to fail and he lost some of the enjoyment of being outdoors. But visits from friends, grandchildren and great-children boosted his spirits considerably. He was a great storyteller and enthralled them with tales of his hunting and fishing days. Due to ill health the last few months of his life were spent with family members in Fort McMurray, Alberta, where he passed away peacefully on July 28, l997.

So now, Dad, in the familiar words you always said to us, we say to you now, "So long and good luck". Have a safe journey home to the Lord. All our love to you.
