Nelson J. Kendall was born in Orleans County, New York in 1844. He was the son of Jerome and Charlotte Abbott Kendall. The family moved to Michigan prior to 1860. Nelson was a wagon maker my trade. Nelson was a veteran of the Civil War, having fought with the 7th Michigan Cavalry under General George Armstrong Custer.
He married Sarah Bennett in 1867 and they had one daughter, Ella May Kendall Shader(1868-1938).
