217350 Private Patrick O'Connor 4th Royal Australian Regiment commonly called Shane, aged 19, from Sydney NSW was a talented footballer who also represented his school in the Combined High Schools track events and who taught Sunday school prior to enlisting in the Australian Regular Army on 15 February 1967. He was posted to 4RAR and sailed with the Battalion to South Vietnam in May 1968.
On 07 July 1968, while the remainder of the Battalion was operating in Bien Hoa Province on Operation TOAN TUNG 2, C Company was deployed to the Horseshoe. Manning the check point at the village of Dat Do, Shane was killed when VC disguised as farmers suddenly produced weapons from their clothing and shot and killed him.
