Jesse was a successful merchant and farmer. After he and Eleanor married, they lived on Fines Creek for three years, then bought a farm on Sandymush near her family and began farming and raising cattle. Not long after his fortieth birthday, he died of typhoid fever. He had been plowing on a hot day on his farm in Sandymush when he got a cool drink of water from the creek that flowed by the field. Unfortunately, a family farther up the creek had typhoid and he caught it from the water. The two children and a woman who was staying with the family also became ill with typhoid, but survived it. Eleanor was left alone to raise and support their five children. Five years later she purchased some tracts on Upper Crabtree and moved her family there.
