How do we honor Al Zook? Keep up his good works (Globe Gazette Editorial)

Every year for 23 years, as regular as Old St. Nick himself, Al Zook and his buddies delivered a Christmas gift to North Iowa.

For 23 years, Zook was chairman of TubaChristmas, the annual gathering of tubas and other low-brass players who filled Southbridge Mall with wonderful holiday music much to the delight of hundreds of fans.

That was typical Al Zook: giving to the community with nothing expected in return — and taking great pleasure in it.

Suffice to say, if Al thought he could make a difference — from the Boy Scouts to schools to the United Way to the City Council — he was ready to lend a hand.

"He was a giver to everybody," said longtime friend John Klemas, who knew him since elementary school.

That's no doubt why his revelation late last year that he had cancer — which caused him to resign from the City Council — and now his death at age 50, stunned and saddened so many people.

We join the community in sending our condolences to wife Danette, children Angela and John, and other family members and friends.

Rare is the person who touches so many people in so many different ways. He was a good, caring, decent family man and community leader.

"He was the most incredibly involved individual," said another longtime friend, Scott Bell. "Just an enormous list of community projects ... it just goes on and on."

His obituary on Page A12 today lists many of his activities and awards he received for his extensive accomplishments.

But we get the feeling that if Al was still among us, he would just flash his big smile and remind us that there's still much to do, that community service never ends and that our communities are only as good as the effort put forth by the people who live in them.

We can and should use his life as inspiration to continue and expand on his good works in our homes, our neighborhood and community.

It's the least we can do to try to repay all he has given us.
