Audrey Jane Burkhead Petersen was born February 24, 1932 at Monroe IN to Loren Burkhead and Stella Boxley. She married Lyndell Pertersen July of 1951 in Custer SD.
On the day of the flood Lyndell was on a floating and fishing trip with friends and Audrey, Drusilla and Estel were spending the day with Audrey's sister Portia VanLeuven on Chicago Street in Rapid City. Lyndell was unaware for two days that his family was missing. Audrey had taken the family pick up and attempted to get to high ground but the wall of water caught her and she and her daughters were swept away as were Frances and Portia VanLeuven. It was days before the bodies were found. She was buried with Drusilla and Estel in Mt View Cemetery.
Audrey is survived by her husband, a son Del both of Rapid City and six siblings, Virginia, Drusilla, Margaret, Loren Jr., Jack, and Wanda.
