Isaac Newton Harvey
Isaac Newton Harvey, born in Flatwoods, Monroe Co., April 29, 1818, died Sept. 6, 1906. Son of Joshua and Sarah Swope Harvey married Sept. 15, 1838, to Elizabeth Comer.

Isaac was a twin brother to Jacob White Harvey, Jacob married Isaac's wife's twin sister Sarah Catherine Comer. They had a double wedding in Flatwoods, Monroe Co.

Isaac came to Summers County to live. He purchased 1000 acres of land from his brother-in-law, John Pack, who had married his sister Elizabeth Harvey. Isaac gave Mr. Pack a mountain rifle as part payment for the land.

Isaac built a home near Streeter, W.Va. He was a prosperous farmer and stone mason. He built many nice, large chimneys for his neighbors. One chimney and fireplace is still in service at his old home near Streeter. Built in the 1850's.

Isaac loved to sing. Singing in minor tones was popular in those days. He smoked a pipe and would light it by placing a piece of glass over the tobacco letting the hot sun start it smoldering. This was very amusing to young children. He was very strict with his children, taught them to work at an early age. Isaac and Elizabeth had 11 children. Jonathan Calvin, James, Overton, William, Eliza, Mandy, Sam, Loranzo, Dow, Seldon, and Leah.

Whenever a son married, Isaac would help him find a spring of fresh water, give him acres of land, help him build a log house. He gave each of his sons enough land for a home.

Isaac's wife Elizabeth died Sept. 18, 1882. He married a second time to a Mrs. Pack who had sons of her own. Two sons, Nathaniel and Lewis were born to Isaac and 2nd wife, Isaac, being too old to work so the sons were adopted by two different Meadows families. Isaac gave his son Jonathan Calvin what he had left of the 1000 acres to take care of him the rest of his life. Isaac died Sept. 6, 1906, and is buried on his home place near Streeter, W.Va.
