YARMOUTH - Robert J. Hodsdon, 86, of West Elm Street, a retired contractor and builder, died Wednesday at a hospital in Winter Haven, Fla. He was born in North Yarmouth, a son of Albert E. and Susie Kimball Hodsdon, moved to Yarmouth as a boy and graduated from Yarmouth High School in 1929. During World War II, he worked for Bath Iron Works. She received his instruction in carpentry from his father and worked several years in commercial construction. For 32 years, he had his own business building homes in Yarmouth and Portland area. Mr. Hodsdon was a member of several organizations, including the First Universalist Church of Yarmouth, the Boy Scout Troop 35 Committee, the Yarmouth Historical Society, Central Men's Club and the Yarmouth Fire Department for 30 years. He was a member of Casco Masonic Lodge, where he recently retired as Tyler after many years. He was also a member of Cumberland Chapter, Royal Arch Masons, Portland Commandry Knights Templar, Portland Council R&SM, and Winnegance Chapter, OES. For several years, he served as building inspector for the town of Yarmouth. Mr. Hodsdon had a great love of baseball. During one summer, he played 84 baseball games. For more than 15 years, he and his wife traveled to Winter Haven to follow the spring training schedule of the Boston Red Sox. During the last few years, he kept busy following the Red Sox and Celtics from the comfort of his home. He also enjoyed camping, hunting, fishing, gardening and feeding birds. Surviving are his wife of 59 years, Alice Johnson Hodsdon; and a son Robert Jr., both of Yarmouth; two brother, Albert E. Jr. of Rumford and Richard of Yarmouth; two grandchildren, Robert and Sara Hodsdon, both of Yarmouth. Visiting hours will be held from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Lindquist Funeral Home, 1 Mayberry Lane. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at First Universalist Church.
