•ID: I37067
•Name: Virginia Elizabeth CORDER
•Sex: F
•Birth: 2 AUG 1860 in Mississippi
•Death: 1 MAR 1933 in Washington, McClain Co, Oklahoma
•Burial: ABT. 3 MAR 1933 Washington Cemetery, Washington, McClain Co, Oklahoma
•Reference Number: 37067
•Note:
from material sent by Jackson Reynolds, 25 Jun 1996:
"(Virginia) Elizabeth KING had been married twice before John W.
Roberts, son of Virginia KING an her first husband L.L.J. ROBERTS, was
living at age 20 in the home of J.W. and Virginia PICKENS in the Census
of 1900, Chickasaw Nation, Indian Territory. Virginia's marriage to Mr.
Brock is said to have lasted for one day."
"KING was an adopted maiden name" jr1996
material from Jackson Reynolds Sept 1996, family files
"William Weeden, as told to Kathy Tidwell:"Jenny could remember living
on the farm in Mississippi and how tall the cotton stalks seemed when
she was small. She also told him that when William King was away in the
Civil War, and Jane and the small children were alone, that a group of
Yankees came to the farm. Jane cooked for them and offered them what
she could spare in the way of food. When they left, they took all they
could find and burned the barn."
"William Weeden, as told to Kathy Tidwell via El Ray Anderson: "Jenny is
listed here as Virginia E. Brock." Mr. Weeden in Mesa Arizona told me
on the phone years ago that the Brock marriaged lasted 1 day. He said
it was never explained, but he was told that they were married and Mr.
Brock sent her home on the train the same day. That's a pretty strange
story, and probably a painful one. In 1880, she was Virginia Roberts.
In 1891, she was Virginia Brock. The marriage could possibly have taken
place in Texas. I wonder what happened to the Roberts husband?"
OBITUARY, 'PERCELL REGISTER', 2 March 1933, via Kathy Tidwell and
ElRay Anderson: "Mrs. V.E. Pickens died at 5:20 a.m. on Wednesday,
March 1, at the Goldsby community at the age of 72 years. Mr. Pickens
preceeded her in death some two or three months ago. She leaves three
sons, Mr. J.F. Pickens, Washington, OK; Mr. J.W. Pickens, Lawton OK,;
Mr. T.A. Pickens Washington, and Mrs. Lee Edwards, Muleshoe, TX.
Funeral services were to be held in Washington at the Baptist Church on
Thursday afternoon with Rev. Ratliff and Rev. Wilson officiating.
Interment was in the Washington Cemetery. The Yoakum Funeral Home was
in charge of the services.: Kathy's note: I believe the J. W. Pickens
listed here as a survivor is actually her son, J.W. Roberts.
