James S. Down
WESTBROOK - James S. Down, 62, of 30 Marlu St., died Tuesday at a Portland hospital. He had lived here for the past 37 years, coming here from Portland.
He was born in Margaretville, Nova Scotia, March 29, 1915, the son of James and Katherine Gibson Down. He attended the schools of Nova Scotia and Portland and was a 1933 graduate of Deering High School where he was active in both football and baseball.
After working for the Esty Transportation co. for several years he joined the Railway Express Agency where he was employed for 30 years, retiring two years ago.
For several years he played baseball in the city's Twilight League. He was active in the Pride's Corner congregational Church serving as a deacon for several years.
Mr. down was past president of the Pride's Corner community club.
He is survived by his wife the former Shirley Lowell; son, James E. of Springfield, VA.; daughter, Mrs. Janice Gower of McLean, VA.; two brothers, Erle H. of Melrose, Mass. and Edward M. of Marblehead, Mass.; two sisters, Mrs. Frances Holland of Saugus, Mass. and Mrs. Katherine Phinney of Westbrook; six grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Friday at the Pride's Corner Congregational Church. Interment will be at Mt. Pleasant Cemetery, South Portland.
