DOWN - James Edward, 56, a former senior White House cryptographic technician with the White House Communications Agency died on May 13, 2001 at the Burke Health Care Center in Burke, Virginia. He had cancer.
Mr. Down, who retired from the Army in 1984, was currently working for Raytheon Systems, in Falls Church, Virginia, as a Senior Design Engineer. He was a longtime Springfield resident.
He was born in Portland, Maine, and raised in Westbrook, Maine where he graduated from Westbrook High School and joined the Army in 1962. After basic and advanced training his first assignment was with the U.S. Forces European Command Headquarters which was located in a suburb outside of Paris, France. It was here that he met his future wife Brenda Crawford. His next assignment was at Fort Ritchie, Maryland at the Alternate National Military Command Center.
After completing additional cryptographic schooling, he served overseas both in Korea and Vietnam. After completion of his combat tour in Vietnam, he served as a cryptographic instructor at the United States Army Signal Command and School at Fort Monmouth, New Jersey. While serving at Fort Monmouth, he was selected for assignment with the White House Communications Agency. His long term association with the White House began in 1973 and ended with his retirement in 1984. He served under Presidents Nixon, Ford, Carter and Reagan. While serving at the White House, he was responsible for all the secure voice communications entering and leaving the White House compound. He traveled extensively with then Vice President George Bush and was in charge of the communications network at the Vice President's summer home in Kennebunkport, Maine. His awards include the Presidential Service Badge, the Joint Service Commendation Medal, and the Army Commendation Medal along with many letters of commendation.
He was a member of the Virginia Youth Soccer Associations Adjudication Committee for the past 15 years. Additionally, he was a USSF Certified referee and a member of the Virginia High School Soccer League, enjoying countless hours refereeing both youth and high school games. In February of this year he was presented the "The 2000 Adele Dolansky Exemplary Service Award" at the Virginia Youth Soccer Association's Workshoip and Awards Luncheon in recognition of his years of dedication to the soccer players of the Virginia Youth Soccer Association.
Survivors include his wife of 34 years, Brenda Crawford Down of Springfield; two children, Deborah Ann Maydak of Baltimore, Maryland and Brian Scott Down of Springfield; his mother, Shirley Lowell Down of Westbrook, Maine; his sister Janice Gower of Raymond, Maine; and one grandchild, Camden James Maydak and numerous nieces and nephews. His sister, Sharon L. McDermott and his father, James Stanley Down, preceded him in death.
Visiting hours will be Wednesday at the Demaine Funeral Home, 5308 Backlick Rd., Springfield, Virginia. Services will be held at 11 am on Thursday at the Demaine Funeral Chapel.
