He enlisted in 1861 under Lincoln's first call of volunteers in Co. G, 12th Kans. Infantry. At the close of the war he came to California by way of the Isthmus of Panama and located in Nevada City where he resided until 1869, when he returned to Paula, Kansas where he met and married Miss Lizzie Kirkham.

The family moved to California in 1870, but after a 3 year stay returned to Kansas, there they resided until they came to Healdsburg in 1901.

He was a Contractor and Builder and was well known in Healdsburg and Berkeley.
