Katie was born in Iowa, but moved to Erie as a young child. The family was poor, and all the children worked to help support the family. She married Alfred Marti, a Swiss immigrant, and they had 3 children. She corresponded regularly with the mother-in-law she never met, and those letters and photos are a family treasure. Katie was my grandmother, but I never knew her. She died when my mother was in college.
