Funeral services for Maurice Axmear, 70, Keswick, were held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 8 at the Keswick United Methodist Church. The Rev. Ron Clayton officiated, assisted by Lynn Rumer, Thornburg.
Axmear, who had been mayor of Keswick 12 years, died of an apparent heart attack Monday, Oct. 5, 1987 at the Knoll Ridge Country Club, North English, where he had been golfing with his son John and and friend, Dean Thomas.
Music was provided by organist Mrs. Kenneth Debont, Keswick. Casket bearers included Asmear's sons and sons-in-law: David, Sigorney; John, Keswick; Joe'd, North English, and George Axmear, Malcom; Denny Garns, Appleton, Wis., and Wayne Silver, Stuttgart, Germany. Interment was in the Port Cemetery near Keswick. Powell Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. A memorial fund has been established.
Clifford Maurice Axmear was born July 4, 1917 northeast of Keswick, the son of George F. and Ethel Fancher Axmear. Her graduated from What Cheer High in 1934.
He married Jean Ellen Horras Oct. 7, 1938 at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. They farmed near Keswick until his retirement in 1974 when they moved into town.
Axmear was a member of the Keswick United Methodist Church and was presently serving as mayor of Keswick. He had been Keokuk County Republican Chairman for many years; past president of the Modern Telephone Company; a former member of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows Lodge and was a 32nd degree Mason.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Jean, Jan. 29, 1987, a sister Evelyn, and a grandson.
