Sergeant Joe H. Butler served in the United States Marine Corps during World War II. He was a cook assigned to Headquarters Squadron, Marine Aircraft Group 43 (HqSq, MAG-43). Sgt Butler was killed when a Japanese aircraft bombed their position just north of Kadena Airfield on 20 April 1945. He was killed alongside four other Marines: MTSgt Warren H. Hemmer - Belleville, IL, TSgt Melvin Reed Jr. - Milford, IN, SSgt William P. Curd - Plattsburgh, MO, and Sgt Alan B. Cook - Fort Arthur, TX.
