ALBION, ME -- Meta Rowe Fowler passed away Sunday, June 29, 2008, at her home after a brief illness.

The daughter of Charles and Annie Rowe, Meta was born on June 1, 1914, and lived her life in Albion. She graduated from Besse High School and began her education career at the age of 17 teaching at Quaker Hill School, a one-room schoolhouse.

Meta married Edgar Fowler on June 15, 1933. They led a farming life and had four children. After her husband's death in 1947, Meta moved to the village, returned to teaching, and retired 28 years later after being both a classroom teacher and principal. Her educational philosophy was to guide children to be physically and mentally fit so they could grasp what she was trying to teach.

Meta was very involved in the community and was an active member of the Albion Grange, Rebekahs, Albion PTA, Albion Senior Citizens and Waldo County Retired Teachers. She enjoyed her family, especially Sunday afternoons when everyone gathered at her home to visit.

Meta was a clever and talented woman. For many years, she crafted homemade Christmas ornaments for each member of the family. She crocheted, knit and designed and made numerous crewel pictures. Meta was a great cook, creating favorite recipes for each holiday. Going on trips with family, she enjoyed traveling the United States.

Meta was predeceased by her husband; parents; four siblings, Stephen, Priscilla, Avonne and Eddie; her son, Stephen Fowler; and her son-in-law, Arthur Blaisdell.

She is survived by three children, Leon Fowler and wife, Betty, of Oakland, Carolyn Blaisdell of Albion, and Linda Vitale and husband, Vite, of Albion; a daughter-in-law, Beverly Fowler of Waterville; 12 grandchildren, Tony Fowler, Terri Fowler, Nancy LeBreque, Edgar Fowler, Michelle Fowler, Tonya Fowler, Diane Quimby, Lawrence Blaisdell, Paul Blaisdell, Vicki Duguay, Melissa Collard, and Matthew Vitale; 22 great-grandchildren and several great-great grandchildren; a sister, Virginia Bradstreet of Albion; a brother-in-law, Freeland Drake of Albion; and many nieces and nephews.

Visiting hours will be Tuesday, July 1, from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m., with funeral services on Wednesday, July 2, at 11 a.m. at Lawry Brothers Funeral Home-Winslow Chapel, 173 China Road in Winslow. A committal service will follow at Maple Grove Cemetery in Albion.

A scholarship will be established in honor of Meta's love for education. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the "Meta R. Fowler Scholarship" in care of Lawrence Blaisdell, 9 Woodspell Rd., Scarborough, ME 04074. The family expresses a special thankyou to Gail Drake of Albion for all her support during this difficult time.

Condolences may be expressed at www.lawrybrothers.com. Arrangements are by Lawry Brothers Funeral Home-Winslow Chapel, 173 China Road, Winslow (800)660-2111.
