Norman was the husband of Remedios P. Deschaine, and the loving father of Norman D. Deschaine of Honolulu HI. The son of Ronaldo Deschaine and of Artheline Deschaine of Lewiston Maine he had enlisted in the US Marine Corps on December 8, 1964 in Portland Maine. In Vietnam, he was assigned to and served with Company D, 1st Battalion, 26th Marines, 3d MARDIV (Rein) FMF.

During the month of June the Battalion was engaged with enemy forces in Quang Nam Province participating in Operations ALLEN BROOK and MAMELUKE THRUST under OPCON (Operational Control) of the 1st Marine Division.

On June 7,the Battalion, under the OPCON of the 7th Marines began participating on Operation MAMELUKE Thrust, making contact with enemy forces in the vicinity of the Cu Ban village complex in Duy Xuyen District. The Marines took heavy enemy automatic weapons fire throughout the day and suffered numerous casualties, Cpl Deschaine was one of the men killed in the action as a result of a hostile gunshot wound.
