His grandfather, Henry Hunting Swan with his wife, Caroline Jackson, and each of his sons Albert Jackson and Clarence Milton homesteaded 120 acres land each between Warren and Bisbee Junction, Arizona near the border with Mexico. Burt sold off his land in small pieces until it was all sold. He then moved to his father's land, where Walter was born.
