Hank Alderman was a crime reporter for a Portland newspaper, city editor for a Yakima paper and owner-editor of a newspaper in Niles, CA. He became involved with the Bonneville Power Project, later known as the Bonneville Power Administration (BPA), in the late 1930s and was the Executive Officer of BPA when he left in 1954 to begin publication of what is now Ruralite Magazine. Ruralite publishes a monthly magazine which is customized for dozens of electric cooperatives throughout the Northwest including Alaska.

Hank was the son of Henry Haines Alderman (1863-1904) and Edith May Kelty (1870-1953). He is descended from Oregon pioneering families on both sides. On the Alderman side, his father and an uncle were sheriffs of Tillamook County, Oregon and his Kelty grandfather was a sheriff of Yamhill County Oregon. Hank's grandmother Sarah Maria (Scott) Kelty was the daughter of John Tucker and Ann (Roelofson) Scott who were also the parents of Harvey W. Scott, longtime editor of the Oregonian and Abigail Scott Duniway, women's rights activist and suffragette.

Hank married Hazel Anona Hake on January 17, 1937 in Yakima, Washington. She was the daughter of Ernest Rexford and Lena (Sigurdson) Hake. Hank and Hazel had two sons Henry Haines III and James M.K.
